How to Get Started and Work with Canva

You can easily edit the purchased templates directly in the Canva app. All you need is an account, the link to the template, and a few simple steps.

How to Get Started with Canva: A Simple Guide for Absolute Beginners

Do you want to start creating graphics in Canva, but aren't sure where to begin once you open the app? Canva is one of the most user-friendly online graphic design tools; thanks to its ready-made templates, even those with no prior design experience can use it with ease.

In Canva, you can create items such as social media posts and Stories, presentations, flyers, posters, business cards, e-books, simple videos, and various other marketing materials.

In this guide, we will show you how to get started with Canva step by step—from creating your first design and customizing a template to adding your own photos and text, and finally, correctly downloading your finished graphic.

What is Canva?

Canva is an online tool for creating graphics, documents, presentations, videos, and other visual content. It works directly in a web browser, as well as via an app for computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

A major advantage is its ease of use and extensive library of ready-made templates. This means you don’t have to start from a blank canvas every single time.

CANVA ACCOUNT

To edit the templates, you need a Canva account. You can log in via the Canva website (www.canva.com) or through the mobile app for Android and iOS.

You can use either the free account (Canva Free) or the paid version (Canva Pro). If you don’t have an account, you can simply sign up for free.

Work using the Canva mobile app, wherever you are.

HOW TO OPEN TEMPLATE

Once your order has been paid for, you will receive an email containing a link to the purchased template, or a PDF file with a button or link.

Clicking this will open the template in the Canva app or your web browser. Then, select the option "Use template as a new design" or "Make a copy".

This creates your own copy of the template, which you can find in your Canva account under the Projects section.

CREATE AND EDIT

You can start editing the copy immediately. For example, you can easily change:

* text and text size,

* colors and fonts,

* photos and videos,

* graphic elements,

* the layout of individual components.

All changes are automatically saved to your Canva account.

If you need help with editing, you can use the instructional videos and guides available directly within Canva, or look for one of the many tutorials available on YouTube.

DOWNLOAD AND SHARE

Once your design is complete, click the Share button in the top-right corner, then select Download.

Choose your preferred file format—such as PNG, JPG, PDF, or MP4. You will then find the downloaded file among your regular downloads on your phone, tablet, or computer.

And that’s it—you can now use, print, or share your edited design.

Frequently Asked Questions about Canva

Is Canva free?

Yes, Canva offers a free version that allows you to create and edit many types of graphics. However, some templates, photos, graphic elements, and advanced features are available only in paid plans.

Do I need to know graphic design?

No. Canva is designed to be used even by people with no prior experience in graphic design.

Ready-made templates help you with the layout of individual elements, and you can then customize the text, photos, and colors.

Can I edit purchased templates in Canva?

Yes. If a product is provided as an editable Canva template, you can create your own copy of the design and edit it further.

Can I use Canva on my mobile phone?

Yes. Canva is also available as a mobile app. However, for more complex edits or when working with a large number of elements, using a computer or tablet is generally more convenient.

What can I create in Canva?

You can use Canva to create social media graphics, presentations, documents, print materials, videos, marketing collateral, simple websites, and many other types of content.

Start simply

To begin with, don’t try to learn all of Canva’s features at once.

Choose one type of graphic, open a suitable template, and try changing the photos, text, colors, and fonts. Once you grasp the basic principles of using the editor, the other features will quickly start to make sense.

In fact, using a ready-made template is often the easiest way to get started with Canva—instead of worrying about the design, you can focus on your own content.
